Apertis 18.03 Release

18.03 is the current stable development release of Apertis, a Debian/Ubuntu derivative distribution geared towards the creation of product-specific images for ARM (both in the 32bit ARMv7 version using the hardfloat ABI and in the 64-bit ARMv8 version) and Intel x86-64 (64-bit) systems.

This Apertis release is based on top of the Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) LTS release with several customization. Test results of the 18.03 release are available in the 18.03 test report.

New features

This release has focused on completing the migration to the new debos building pipeline which was started during the 17.12 release cycle and is now complete. The new pipeline is meant to be faster and more flexible, and also allow developers to easily build custom images on their machines.

Work also continues on implementing OSTree based images. OSTree based images are now available for ARM (both 32bit ARMv7 and 64-bit ARMv8 versions) and Intel x86-64 (64-bit). These images are provided as a technology preview in 18.03 in addition to the regular deb based images. OSTree is to be used as the basis for a robust and efficient update mechanism. Integration of the OSTree based images into the automated LAVA test environment is underway.

Design and documentation

Image building infrastructure documentation

A design document has been added to cover the high-level concept and infrastructure setup required for debos based image building.

Deprecations and ABI/API breaks

Deprecations

During this release cycle we have continued to mark obsolete or problematic APIs with the ABI break tag as a way to clear technical debt in future.

Mildenhall UI framework

The Mildenhall UI toolkit is deprecated in favour of other UI toolkits such as GTK+, Qt, or HTML5-based solutions

From the next release Apertis may no longer ship the Mildenhall UI toolkit nor any accompanying libraries, as the underlying Clutter library has been deprecated upstream for some years now.

Application framework

ribchester-full and canterbury-full are deprecated

From the next release Canterbury and Ribchester will only offer the APIs provided by the respective -core and the additional APIs offered by the -full packages will be dropped

Breaks

No known breaking changes are part of the 18.03 release.

Infrastructure

Apertis infrastructure tools

Repositories for Debian Jessie based systems and Ubuntu Trusty based systems are obsoleted:

 $`` ``deb`` https://repositories.apertis.org/debian/ ``jessie`` ``tools  $`` ``deb`` https://repositories.apertis.org/ubuntu/ ``trusty`` ``tools

Packages lava v1 and django deps, obs 2.3, etc are obsoleted as well.

For Debian Stretch based systems:

 $ deb https://repositories.apertis.org/debian/ stretch tools

New lqa, debos and deps, lava v2, obs 2.7, ostree-push are available as replacement.

Images

Image daily builds, as well as release builds can be found at:

 https://images.apertis.org/

Image build tools can be found in the Apertis tools repositories.

Jenkins jobs template

Jenkins jobs template are all ship centrally in apertis-jenkins-jobs Git repo:

  https://git.apertis.org/cgit/apertis-jenkins-jobs.git/

instead of spread all over individual Git repos. (This only applies to the new releases from 18.03 onwards.)

Image recipes

We no longer use apertis-customizations and apertis-image-customization repositories to hold files related to the image building infrastructure. Instead of them, please refer to this new repository for debos configuration and related files:

   https://git.apertis.org/cgit/apertis-image-recipes.git/

(This only applies to the new releases from 18.03 onwards.)

LAVA

LAVA migration to run Version 2 jobs have been completed during this quarter. LAVA devices were properly configured to use the new version and all Apertis tests jobs have been ported to use this new job format (V2).

LAVA server has been upgraded to version 2018.2 dropping support for V1 jobs and completing the V2 migration: https://lava.collabora.co.uk/static/docs/v2/index.html
